Why Interoperability Matters

Interoperability is the ability of different DPP systems, platforms, and tools to exchange and use product passport data seamlessly. Without interoperability, each manufacturer's DPP would exist in isolation, defeating the purpose of creating a connected information ecosystem for products.

The ESPR explicitly requires that Digital Product Passports be interoperable, meaning data from one system must be readable and usable by any other compliant system. This is essential for supply chain partners, regulators, and consumers to access and understand DPP data.

Levels of Interoperability

DPP interoperability operates at multiple levels:

  • Technical interoperability: systems can connect and exchange data using common protocols (APIs, data carriers)
  • Syntactic interoperability: data is structured in agreed formats (JSON-LD, XML) that can be parsed by any system
  • Semantic interoperability: data elements have shared meanings through common vocabularies and ontologies
  • Organisational interoperability: governance frameworks ensure trust and consistent data quality across organisations

Standards Enabling Interoperability

Several standards and specifications support DPP interoperability. GS1 standards provide the identification framework through GTINs and serial numbers. JSON-LD and schema.org vocabularies enable semantic data exchange. The ESPR's technical standards will define specific interoperability requirements for DPP platforms.

Content negotiation allows the same DPP endpoint to serve data in different formats (HTML for humans, JSON-LD for machines), supporting diverse use cases from a single data source.

Implementation Approach

Adopt open standards from the start rather than proprietary formats. Use GS1 identifiers for product identification, JSON-LD for data serialisation, and standard APIs for data access. This approach ensures your DPP data is accessible to the widest range of stakeholders.

MyProductPassport is built on open standards with full content negotiation support, ensuring your product passports are interoperable with any compliant system.
