What Is the ESPR?
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is the EU's landmark framework for making products sold in the European market more sustainable, durable, and circular. Published in 2024, it replaces the 2009 Ecodesign Directive and dramatically expands the scope of sustainability requirements.
At the heart of ESPR is the Digital Product Passport (DPP) — a standardised digital record that accompanies every product, containing environmental data, materials composition, repairability information, and supply chain details. Consumers, regulators, and recyclers can access the DPP via a QR code on the product.
ESPR applies to virtually all physical products placed on the EU market, with sector-specific deadlines rolling out from 2027 to 2030. Non-EU businesses that export to Europe must also comply.
