Sustainability KPIs Defined
Key Performance Indicators for product sustainability are measurable values that demonstrate how effectively a product meets environmental and circular economy objectives. Under the ESPR, specific KPIs must be calculated, tracked, and declared in Digital Product Passports for each regulated product category.
Unlike general corporate sustainability reporting, DPP KPIs are product-level metrics that enable direct comparison between similar products, helping consumers and procurement teams make informed choices.
Common DPP Sustainability KPIs
The ESPR framework defines several categories of product-level KPIs:
- Carbon footprint per unit or per functional unit
- Recycled content percentage by material type
- Durability metrics: expected lifetime, number of use cycles
- Reparability score: availability of spare parts, repair documentation
- Energy efficiency rating during the use phase
- Recyclability rate at end of life
- Hazardous substance content relative to thresholds
Measuring and Tracking KPIs
Each KPI requires a defined methodology for consistent measurement. The ESPR delegated acts for each product category will specify exactly how each KPI should be calculated, what data sources are acceptable, and what level of verification is required.
Tracking KPIs over time allows manufacturers to demonstrate improvement and benchmark against industry performance. This data also feeds into regulatory reporting and helps identify areas where product design can be improved.
Using KPIs Effectively
Focus on the KPIs that matter most for your product category and where you can demonstrate genuine performance. Set internal targets that go beyond minimum compliance to create competitive advantage.
MyProductPassport provides structured fields for all ESPR-relevant KPIs, making it straightforward to declare and track sustainability performance across your product portfolio.
