EU Wine E-Label Checklist for Importers Shipping Into the EU

If you import wine into the EU, you are on the hook for compliant labelling, including the ingredient and nutrition rules that started on 8 December 2023. This is a practical checklist for getting a compliant wine e-label in place.

The checklist

  • Check the cut-off. Wine imported before 8 December 2023 may continue to be marketed until stocks are exhausted. Wine placed on the EU market from that date must carry the full ingredient list and nutrition declaration, on the label or via an e-label.
  • Keep the essentials on the bottle. The energy value and allergens must appear on the physical label, in the understandable official language or languages of each market.
  • Put the full detail behind a QR. The full ingredient list and nutrition declaration can go on the e-label page.
  • Make the page neutral. No marketing, no sales content, no user tracking, direct access, and one single reference product per QR (European Commission Notice C/2023/1190).
  • Keep it live. The e-label must stay accessible for at least as long as the wine is expected to remain suitable for consumption.
  • Cover your languages. Provide the information in the language of each Member State you ship into.

Why importers like an e-label

For an importer handling wines from several producers and markets, printing full ingredient and nutrition panels in multiple languages onto every back label is impractical. A multilingual e-label centralises that work and lets you update it without reprinting labels.

MyProductPassport gives importers a .eu-hosted, multi-language, self-serve e-label with a free tier, so you can trial it before committing to a full EU rollout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is responsible for wine e-label compliance, the producer or the importer?

The business placing the wine on the EU market is responsible. For imported wine, that responsibility falls on the importer.

Do US or other non-EU wineries need this?

If their wine is placed on the EU market, yes. The same requirements apply regardless of where the wine was produced.

Exact product categories and the scope of aromatised wine products under Annex VII of Regulation 1308/2013 and Regulation (EU) No 251/2014 should be verified for your range. General guidance, not legal advice.
