Winefo is one of the better-known tools for creating an EU-compliant wine e-label. If you are weighing it up, this is an honest comparison of what it offers and where an alternative with a permanent free tier might suit you better.

What Winefo offers

Winefo is a self-serve wine e-label tool. Its published plan is 250 EUR per year for a single account with unlimited wines and labels, billed annually, available in all 24 EU languages, with self-serve signup. It is a focused, wine-specific product.

Where MyProductPassport differs

MyProductPassport is a Digital Product Passport platform that includes wine e-labels. The main differences for a winery:

  • A permanent free tier to start, rather than paying up front. You only move to a paid plan once your label volume grows: the E-Label plan is £119 a year (€139 a year on the .eu site) for up to 100 tracking-free e-labels, and the Starter (£19 a month) and Professional (£49 a month) plans cover wider passport use.
  • Fully self-serve, with no sales call: sign up, add a wine, publish.
  • 24 EU languages and a dedicated, neutral passport page for each wine, separate from your commercial website.
  • A wider roadmap: because it is a passport platform, the same account also covers battery passports and future ESPR product scope, not just wine.

Both tools have to meet the same legal baseline: a direct-access QR, a neutral page free of sales and marketing, and no user tracking, under Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 and European Commission Notice C/2023/1190. The choice is about entry cost, breadth and how you like to work, not about one being compliant and the other not.

An honest note on the numbers

You will sometimes see a "1,000+ producers" figure quoted in the wine e-label market. That self-reported figure belongs to U-label, a different platform, not to Winefo, so we do not repeat it as Winefo's. And MyProductPassport does not claim to be the cheapest option: other tools, such as wine-elabels.eu, also offer a free plan. Our pitch is a genuinely generous free tier plus self-serve simplicity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free way to create a wine e-label?

Yes. MyProductPassport has a free tier you can use to create and publish wine e-labels, and there are other tools with free plans too. Winefo itself is a paid annual plan.

Do I need a sales call to get started?

Not with MyProductPassport. It is self-serve: you create an account, add your wine and generate the QR yourself.

You can start free and only upgrade when you outgrow the free tier.
