EU Regulation 2023/1542

EU Battery Passport Software

Create compliant battery passports for industrial, EV, and LMT batteries. All 37 required Annex XIII data fields pre-configured, with automated compliance scoring and QR code generation.

Compliance Deadline 18 February 2027 (135 days remaining)

What Is a Battery Passport?

A battery passport is a digital record mandated by EU Regulation 2023/1542 that must accompany every LMT battery, every industrial battery with a capacity above 2 kWh and every electric vehicle battery placed on the European market. It provides a complete data profile of the battery, accessible via a QR code throughout its lifecycle.

The passport must contain the data points defined in Annex XIII of the regulation (37 once Annex VI Part A is unpacked), covering the battery's composition, carbon footprint, recycled content, performance characteristics, supply chain due diligence, and end-of-life handling instructions. Check your own data against all 37 with the free gap checker.

Battery passports are the first product category to require Digital Product Passports under the EU's sustainability framework. They serve as the template for all other product categories that will follow under the ESPR regulation.

What Data Must a Battery Passport Contain?

The EU Battery Regulation defines 7 categories of mandatory data. MyProductPassport includes all of them as pre-configured fields with guided help text.

Battery Identification

Core identity data for each battery unit.

  • Battery category (industrial, EV, LMT, SLI, portable)
  • Battery weight, status, chemistry
  • Manufacturing date and place

Carbon Footprint

Lifecycle emissions data per Article 7.

  • Total carbon footprint (kg CO2e)
  • Performance class (A to G)
  • Breakdown by lifecycle stage

Materials and Substances

Chemistry, critical raw materials, and hazardous substances.

  • Battery chemistry type
  • Critical raw materials and sources
  • REACH/CLP hazardous substances

Circularity and End-of-Life

Recycled content and dismantling data.

  • Recycled cobalt, lead, lithium, nickel %
  • Dismantling and safety instructions
  • Spare parts and collection info

Performance and Durability

Capacity, voltage, power, and lifecycle data.

  • Capacity, voltage, rated capacity
  • State of health and capacity fade
  • Expected lifetime (cycles and years)

Supply Chain Due Diligence

Responsible sourcing per Articles 47 to 52.

  • Due diligence compliance status
  • Policy references and audits
  • OECD guidance alignment

Battery Regulation Timeline

17 August 2023
Regulation in Force
Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 enters into force; its obligations apply in stages from here.
From 2025
Carbon Footprint Declarations
Article 7 declarations phase in by battery category, EV batteries first, each 12 months after its delegated act on the calculation method is adopted.
18 August 2026 at the earliest
Labelling Requirements
Article 13 labelling (general information and capacity marking) applies 18 months after the labelling implementing act enters into force, or on 18 August 2026 if that is later. The Commission's draft act was published in December 2025, so the real date falls after August 2026.
18 February 2027
Battery Passports Mandatory
Digital battery passports (Article 77) and the QR code that carries them (Article 13(6)) required for LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and EV batteries. The first product passport mandate in EU law.
18 August 2031
Recycled Content Minimums
Article 8 minimum recycled content in new batteries: 16% cobalt, 85% lead, 6% lithium, 6% nickel.

Who Needs a Battery Passport?

The battery passport requirement applies to any business that manufactures, imports, or places batteries on the EU market. This includes:

  • EV battery manufacturers producing batteries for electric vehicles
  • E-bike and e-scooter brands using LMT batteries (sealed, 25 kg or less)
  • Energy storage system providers (home batteries, grid storage, UPS)
  • Industrial battery manufacturers for forklift, warehouse, and telecommunications applications
  • UK manufacturers exporting to the EU who must comply regardless of post-Brexit status
  • Battery recyclers and second-life companies who need passport data for processing
