Wine E-Labels in EU Languages: The Rules You Must Meet

A Bordeaux sold in Germany, Poland and the Netherlands has to be understandable to consumers in each of those markets. That is why language is a core part of getting a wine e-label right.

The language rule

Compulsory particulars must appear in one or more official languages of the Union, under Article 121(1) of Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013. In practice, the mandatory information must be understandable to consumers in each Member State where the wine is marketed.

Protected designation of origin and protected geographical indication names, and traditional terms, are shown in their protected language or languages under Article 121(2).

Why a multilingual e-label helps

The e-label is a natural place to solve the language problem. Rather than printing several languages onto a small back label, a multilingual e-label with a language selector lets each consumer read the ingredients and nutrition in their own language. This is the common compliant approach for producers selling across several EU markets.

MyProductPassport supports the 24 EU languages and runs each wine's e-label on a .eu domain, which fits the neutral, market-appropriate delivery the rules expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which languages does a wine e-label need?

The official language or languages of each Member State where you sell the wine, so the mandatory information is understandable to those consumers.

Can one e-label serve several languages?

Yes. A multilingual e-label with a language selector is a common and practical way to meet the requirement across markets.

The exact wording of Article 121 should be confirmed against the consolidated EU text; the language guidance here follows the Commission Notice. General guidance, not legal advice.
